GEO TOURIST GUIDE TOURS - Tourist Recommended Caches

Question: Are these tourist recommended caches intended to take tourists to the best caches in a particular area, or simply to caches near tourist attractions they should visit?

The reason I ask is that the former would be very useful and the latter is rather unnecessary. While we haven't found all of the caches on the Lisboa list, we have found some, and some of them are not necessarily the *best* or most significant Lisboa has to offer.

Perhaps it might be good to create some categories of great caches to help out tourists, such as:
Great hides (excellent camouflage, cunning hides)
Scenic caches (great views, etc)
Significant caches (oldest in the area, most finds, etc)
Etc

It's a mix of both. Basically are caches near tourist attractions that not necessarily apears in the regular tourist guides. Caches that the author think, as a foreigner tourist he'd love to visit. He avoided multi-caches or mystery caches only written in portuguese language that a non-portuguese speaker wouldn't be able to solve it. He also avoided caches with bad neighbourhood or placed in dirty places.

Not to mention he's actually quite busy with.. uh... real life... and hasn't had the time to update the bookmark list properly... with the new caches that have been showing up...

Thanks for the feedback, nevertheless. I tried to apply to Lisbon the same thing I like to practice when I'm travelling abroad. Looking for the places I'd like to visit as a tourist which have worthy caches nearby.

Anyway, I'm available for clarifications regarding the caches shown on the bookmark, as outdated as it is.

Totally agree with you both (btr & prodrive). Those lists are a great place to start.

We recently did a road trip across Australia, and I would have killed for a decent list of "must visit" caches in order to focus our limited time on the better caches rather than simply those closest to our route. I basically had loaded every cache within 100kms of our route, plus all the caches in the state we spent most time in. Looking back afterwards I have noticed that while we did ok, we missed at least a few really good ones.

I do have an idea or two on how to go about this, and forgive me if this may have been tried before or already exists elsewhere. It would be a relatively simple exercise to create a small database of what can generally be considered as the better caches in any given area, and then allowed logged in users to apply ratings under certain predefined categories. All I'm thinking of is a database of cache name, code, url, and ratings, with an interface to view/sort by area, code, name or ratings.

Additions to this database would be via nomination (and added by an admin) and need not contain every cache, but just a subset that forum users here consider worthy of note.

I don't know how integrated it could be into this site, and while I'm not expert php developer, I reckon I have a good portion of the required code in my head already.

That is something I will endeavour to do, however since most of our caching is unfortunately not done in Portugal, it takes a bit of thinking to remember the names of the ones that really stood out...

You got me there, you're absolutely right. That strip between Parque das Nações and the bridge is really really a nice walk and deserves the credit.

A Madeira

Olá amigos geocachers!
É o meu objectivo apresentar a minha linda ilha de que muitos dizem que é uma pérola no Atlantico. Existem já há muitos anos caches mas nos últimos dois anos ficaram mais e mais. Agora o arquipélago da Madeira tem mais de 50 caches e um fim do crescimento não parece provável.
Ao invés do continente, os geocachers são normalmente turistas. Não tem bastante tempo para procurar as caches. Um “did not find” é sempre uma desilusão. Por causa disto há algumas vezes um spoiler demais do que a menos.
Eu já disse que os cachers são muitas vezes visitantes da ilha e por isso planeiam rotas ou caminhadas. Por isso pensava que seria melhor também apresentar não só uma cache numa região mas uma rota em que há caches quais pode-se variar ao gosto particular.

Também uma levada muito antiga e silenciosa. Tinha sido o caminho onde os “homens de gelo” correram do poço da neve ao Funchal com 40 quilogramas de gelo às costas. Caminheiros brutais andam este caminho para a volta ao Funchal em vez de num carro.

Um micro no centro velho do Funchal. É mais ou menos impossível tomar a cache sem ser visto. Por isso todos os empregados dos restaurantes em torno do lugar são informados e têm de guardar a cache. Quem tem problemas a encontrar pode pedir ajuda deles.

Das muitas destas rotas tenho tracks em formato *.gpx que são compatível com muitas programas como Google Earth, MapSource, KOMPASS etc. Quando uma cache é de mim, o texto é escrito em inglês. Mas há em cima da descrição da cache um link “Related webpage”. Através deste link pode fazer um download com os textos das todas minhas caches em português.
