The Aviator [2004]If you’re a nervous flier, this film might help put your nerves to rest. The Aviator follows the story of legendary film director and aviation enthusiast Howard Hughes’ career in the late 1920s-1940s.
Cast Away [2000]In a nutshell: Tom Hanks stranded on an island. You’ve probably seen this one, but what better way to kick off a travel films list than with a classic. For similar island vibes less the isolation, you might consider another 2000 travel classic, The Beach.
Anna Karenina [2012]Put Keira Knightley and Jude Law together in aristocratic Russia circa late-19th Century and you have a pretty good film with a strong insight into modern Russian history. This film is also particularly insightful for those interested in visiting St Petersburg, Russia’s former capital.
Nebraska [2013] This critically acclaimed film is likely to be one you haven’t seen before, but it is certainly up to the Sunday-afternoon standard and should be place on your list of films to watch when in need of an escape. The story follows a man and his estranged son who travel from Montana to Nebraska.
Out of Africa [1985]The perfect introduction to life as a Westerner living in Africa or the cultural differences for expats more generally, Out of Africa is a fantastic film featuring the one and only Meryl Streep.
The Endless Summer [1996]An old school surf documentary that takes you around the world in search of “the perfect wave”.
Thelma & Louise [1991]What do you get when one housewife and one independent solo woman take themselves on a road trip? Adventure. And things going wrong… of course! This thriller/drama from the early 90’s will keep you entertained for a couple of hours.
The Talented Mr. Ripley [1999]Chances are you may have seen Mr. Ripley over the years since it was released in the late 1990’s, but it is well worth a re-watch for the travel focus, if not to see Matt Damon in his prime time.
If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium [1969]A tour guide’s patience is tested when he takes a tour group of Americans across Europe. Good, fun humour and an effortless laugh.
Two for the Road [1967]A married couple make their way to France to test the limits of their lifeless marriage. Infidelity threatens to capture both of them in this holiday un-romance film. Audrey Hepburn is a delight to watch, as usual.
