RIP Garmin Oregon 450

Garmin has discontinued the Oregon 450, one of the most popular handheld GPS receivers they have ever made.
Also on the chopping block: the 450t, 550 and 550t.
Of course these models will still be supported and receive firmware updates for some time to come, but I am a bit surprised by this.
The 450 has been incredibly popular, and the 600 series doesn’t really have all the bugs worked out yet.
Plus, they haven’t exactly received universal acclaim.
Now granted, touchscreens have improved since the 450 came out.
This is a unit that required you to tilt it properly to be able see the screen in some conditions.
You would tend to do that without thinking, but it certainly wasn’t a good unit for fixed mount use.
On the bright side, this does mean there are some good deals out there.

Coincidências do caraças... ainda ontem enviei um e-mail à Garmin a perguntar se era expectável um update de software, ou se os Oregon x50 iriam para a prateleira

Se consultarem a página da Garmin "discontinued on the trail", o Oregon 550 também já lá está.

É pena. Creio que será sempre o meu melhor GPS. E um bocado o WIndows XP dos GPS's. Melhor que os antecessores e melhor que os seguintes. Não gosto do rumo que o conceito de GPSr's está a tomar, aproximando-se dos Smartphones. Se eu quiser um Smartphone, compro um. Aliás, tenho um, cumpre com outras obrigações. Para GPSr, quero um GPSr's, robusto, preciso. No futuro, quando perder este ou se avariar, procurarei sempre comprar outro 450 ou 550 em segunda mão.

Bom, eu tenho um 600 e posso dizer que é exatamente isso que descreves. Robusto e preciso.
Sou um cliente muito satisfeito.

E não, não tenho smartphone.

O que eu utilizo é oregon 450. Bem parece que se avariar dentro da garantia a garmin vai ter de me dar superior a este.

Também ouço falar que o dakota 20 é muito bom, muito preciso...

Tenho um 550 e não é por isso que vou trocar de GPS.

Além do mais este dá para fazer coisa que, segundo me disseram, o 600 não faz.
